There are quite a bunch of options, depending on whether you need it anywhere, or in a specific location, the speeds you want, the size of the antennas/terminals you're willing to have and most importantly the amount of money you're willing to spend.
The two global systems (with low orbit satellites) are Globalstar and Iridium. Other non-global systems include Inmarsat and some others I don't remember (you might want to check out the ones that were/are used for the in-flight phone services).
All have prices that are above $1/mn for data rates of usually 9600 bps or less, sometimes 64K (on Inmarsat, if you're willing to carry a quite big terminal).
Maybe if you have a better description of your exact needs (speed, application, locations, one-way or two-way, stationary or mobile, budget, etc.) one might be able to find better solutions...
Hope that helps,
Jacques.

anyone know anything about getting "global" internet access via satellite phones? Obviously CNN reporters and the like have this kind of thing in order to send in their reports from middle-of-nowhere, Afghanistan. Are there any comercial companies offering this service to individual clients?
