Dustin et al,

This represents a positive move in the industry. Whether it is a marketing
ploy or otherwise, Verizon does have a substantial user base in the NYC
area, and their customers are getting a great service, at no additional
cost, thanks to the APs they have so far installed.

It is important to note, that while these companies are giving it away for
free, the community networking groups should continue contributing by
building more open nodes.

Reasons:

1. While Verizon is placing APs all over the city, these are only locations
they have deemed fit. A significant portion of the city, particularly in the
outer boroughs have limited wi-fi options.

2. Verizon is only allowing their customers access to their networks. Most
of the city does not subscribe to Verizon DSL, and community nodes are free
and open to all. Hence, you are benefitting everyone.

3. There is no guarantee Verizon is going to keep their nodes free. They may
be attempting to create a market for themselves by installing wi-fi nodes
without charging customers, getting them used to the service and then
convert it into a for-pay service, or they will charge a fee for "Premium"
access while everyone else using their nodes will be limited to 128kbps,
etc.
