"FCC SEEKS TO RELAX UNLICENSED TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

The FCC has released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking comment on proposed changes to several technical rules contained in Parts 2 and 15 of the Commission’s Rules. Specifically, the rule changes proposed in the NPRM would permit operators, including wireless Internet service providers, and device manufacturers to more readily modify or substitute technically equivalent parts, facilitating increased deployment of broadband services. Some of the proposed rule changes in the NPRM include amending the rules to allow the use of “smart antennas” for unlicensed services, allowing easier deployment of Bluetooth-capable devices and relaxing regulatory constraints to allow more flexibility in system design and deployment of unlicensed devices.
