Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting to this list so I thought I'd say hello and introduce myself. I'm not yet an official member but hope to meet some of you guys at the next meeting and make it official.

I joined this list because I'm really interested in wireless networking and want to setup a wifi access point to share with my street, block, or neighborhood. The stronger I can make the signal the better. :) I have Linux experience but am definitely no sysadmin, so I was hoping some of the experts on this list can help me along the way.

I have an old Dell machine which I was planning on using as the wifi access point, but am now considering going the Soekris net4521 method after reading Peter Seebach's write up on www-106.ibm.com. I'm looking for the easiest method to get up and running. Security is a big concern for me though.

I'm currently using roadrunner as my ISP but am in the process of changing to acedsl so I can share my connection. I live in the east village and my initial intention was to help the people who run evill.net get a wider range to our neighborhod. Their website and the magicbike website is what got me really interested in wifi and setting up a node of my own.

Anyway I guess I've blabbed enough. I'm really excited about all of this and I hope you guys can guide me along the way. Please let me know where I should start!

Thanks,

Thomas Koch
