I can't figure this out - if there's a better, basic questions forum, please refer me. Nutshell is I've had an Orinoco Silver card and a D-Link 650-AP for several years. I almost never use the D-Link - I keep it in a spare laptop. The Orinoco has worked perfectly with every stripe of AP I've encountered, but all of a sudden, I can't get it to work properly with a Linksys AP that my new roommate has connected in the place we're moving into. I ditched my old AP when I left my last place.

1. WEP is not running. Once I can get them the Linksys to function with the Orinoco I'll start doing some basic securing (mac filtering, wep, non-broadcast, etc).

2. The D-Link works in both machines, the Orinoco does not.

3. The Orinoco software suggests a strong link

4. The Orinoco does obtain an IP, and is able to communicate with the AP to some degree - out of a given 50 ping attempts, roughly 12 to 16 are sucessful, usually in groups, usually with 10 or so timeouts between blocks.

5. I believe that there's a second Linksys box in an apartment nearby. I tried using a different SSID but the problem seemed to persist, so I brought the AP back to factory defaults.

My apologies for the clutter.

Thanks,

Dan
