Many of the NY Public Library branches
have free WiFi. For a complete list see:

I've been wondering if this is one of NYC's best-kept
secrets. On impulse, fully expecting a Huh???, I
asked at the info desk at the Hudson Park branch
across the street from my bldg if they had a node.

The dude walked me over to the counter and pointed
out the AP mounted high above. Given the branch's
city-budget-constricted hours, the icing is that
the 24/7 signal passes through the windows to the
city park outside.

The bad news is that the section of the park closest
to the windows is a gated playground; the only adults
permitted are those accompanying children. By the
time the signal--quite strong in the playground--
reaches the benches beyond it's iffy although I
did talk to a guy on the Fourth of July who had
it on a Powerbook. "Using the library's signal?"
I asked. "No--the Parks Department's: NYPL." "Uh ...
that would be New York Public Library," I advised.

I don't hold out much hope for persuading Parks
to admit adults accompanying children OR carrying
a wifi laptop, or even of getting a couple of benches
installed on the wide sidewalk outside the playground
where the signal should be nearly as strong.

Not a single notice in the library or the park
announces the node.
