Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) have just introduced the bi-partisan Community Broadband Act of 2005 to affirm the right of any municipality to provide a broadband internet network for citizens, and prevent States from prohibiting such networks. The Bill is a direct response to HR 2726, Session's Anti-Municipal Broadband Bill. “Government should work to open doors to greater technology for the American people, not slam them shut,” said Lautenberg. “There is no valid justification for blocking local communities from offering broadband to its residents. If a town or a city wants to offer broadband as a tool for education and economic development, why should a state stop them?”
