Good Page!

If you dont have some electric clue, and feel you need some, ask away.

I dont do much with POE vs using the Anderson Power Poles these days, but I'll see if i can find any pictures of some mods to add to that.

I remain a fan of modifying the device which is to be powered rather than makeing a gozeinta [no good hyperlink avail so "goes in to" for the non-EN speakers.] The danger is that the goesinta will be incorrectly paired with the appliance later on. (its not like appliance and goesinta both say NETGEAR or CISCO on them, mistakes happen.)

When space permits always use either a half or better yet a full wave bridge rectifier on the voltage input. This protects the appliance from reverse voltage becuase as the page says no standard for POE exists.

For optimal protection assume it is reasonable that the device might get as little as its desired input voltage or as many as 24V PEP AC when space permits use a regulator, preferably one with thermal overload protection.

Also note some devices sold with 9 volt power supplies include regulators that can take up to 28 volts, be aware that providing them with even as much as 12volts can cause them to run a lot hotter, so test all modifications before deploying them.

Use of a full wave bridge recifier (and maybe a capacitor) allows you to take that device, convert to AC and go the full 100metres with that cat5 whenever you want.

Needless to say this voids your warantee, so if long POE runs or frequent relocation are in you future you might want to heed some of this, but practice your skills on some old HUBS that you dont care about anymore!

Have fun, don't melt anything I wouldn't melt.

WIKI: POE-Power Over Ethernet

There's a seriously detailed wiki page up on Power Over Ethernet.

Thanks Terry!
