Greetings, list members. I'm finally back on the list after a couple or so
years, this time with a different email account.

I'm having problems with my Linksys 802.11g card. Can someone help
troubleshoot? I haven't been able to get a web site in a browser window for
over three days now on the usual wireless network. I tried a bunch of
things:

1. I called Dell to help troubleshoot the Inspiron 8200 laptop-- one of the
last things we did was a Repair Installation of Windows XP Home. It's more
screwed up now than before-- it freezes up and some of the Utilities don't
function. This is ok-- I can do a full Reinstall later on my own. The tech
suggested that I might have a virus or spyware. I told him that I have
Norton installed on both partitions and AVG on the first partition as well.
I have Microsoft Defender and Adaware SE installed on the First partition
also, and I scan with all programs at least once a day (different times for
each program).

2. We also uninstalled and reinstalled the Linksys software. No luck.

3. The Dell & Linksys techs suggested that my firewall might be
interfering. I didn't have problems before, but I disabled the Zone Alarm
anyway, to entertain them. No luck.

4. I have two partitions on my laptop's hard drive, both of which have XP
Home installed. On the First (now screwed up) partition, I got good signal
with the card, but "Limited or no connectivity". I clicked Repair but got
an error message stating that I wasn't getting an IP address. The Dell &
Linksys techs both had me do an IP config and other stuff to no avail. I
thought maybe there was something wrong with the particular network, so I
decided to try other networks...

 3. I went to the park near City Hall the other night. I picked up several
networks, a few of which were open/unsecured. I got good signal from them
but still couldn't get a page to open at all in a browser window: so it's
not the particular network that's having problems-- it's the laptop and/or
card. Which is it?

4. I tried running the card on the Second partition, which also has XP
installed (with all Updates as well). The card used to run on this seldomly
used partition perfectly well. Since I did the Repair Installation of XP on
the First partition, this Second partition should've been spared from
getting screwed up like the First one, right? The card's lights come on,
but this time instead of Limited or No Connectivity, I got Very Good to
Excellent signal, but I still couldn't get a page to open. Then I got the
blue screen of death on the Second partition. I haven't tried to reboot
since. The Second partition also got screwed up somehow.

5. I usually run the card in the Second (bottom) card slot, to keep the
dust off. I thought maybe the slot might be screwed up, so I switched to
the First (top) slot. No luck.

6. When I called Linksys to help troubleshoot the card (see above), they
recommended I try the card in another laptop. We tried to install the card
and software on an older laptop which has 'Windows mE on it. The
installation worked but the card didn't (the card lights came on though).
The tech said that these g cards don't always work with mE anyway-- try a
better OS. But I don't have another working laptop with a newer OS. The
tech suggested I hook up my laptop to another (wired) network to see if it's
the laptop that's having the problem. I will try connecting to a DSL
network tomorrow at a friend's house.

7. Last night the same friend said that these cards tend to get "burnt
out". I don't know if this is true. I actually sniffed the card anyway,
and it didn't smell burnt at all LOL

Pretty soon, I'm gonna have to resort to voodoo to get this fixed. Any tips
or suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.
