A immature male yellow-headed blackbird was observed late this afternoon
for 1.5 hrs visiting a feeder behind the office building at Pruyn
Audubon Sanctuary, 275 Millwood Road (Route 133), Chappaqua, NY. The
bird was with a mixed flock of approximately three dozen brown-headed
cowbirds and red-winged blackbirds.
Pruyn Sanctuary is open to the public between dawn and dusk. Visitors
are asked to stay outside the rail fences on the sides of the office
building. The mixed flock flew several times between the feeder area up
to the surrounding trees offering good views without requiring closer
approach.
When flushed by a hunting sharp-shinned hawk, the flock flew northwest
across Route 133 but returned to the feeding area ten minutes later.
This may be the same bird first observed at a private feeder near
Kitchawan Preserve on January 2nd (1.8 mi NNW) but not relocated after
that date.
Today's sighting was through spotting scopes by Trudy Battaly, Drew
Panko, Rik Kaufman and Anne Swaim. Identifying photos were also taken by
Trudy Battaly.
