Highlights of reports received November 18 through December 2 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include Niagara River gulls, BALTIMORE
ORIOLE, MARSH WREN and winter finches.
Eleven gull species were reported on the Niagara River between the
falls and the lower river power plants during the Thanksgiving
holiday. CALIFORNIA GULL was found above the falls at Goat Island, at
Devil's Hole State Park and at the Beck power plant overlook in
Ontario. Observers are not certain if this is one or two individuals.
BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE below the Horseshoe Falls. LITTLE GULLS at the
Whirlpool and above the falls. Six ICELAND GULLS and 2 THAYER'S GULLS
at the power plants. GLAUCOUS GULL and several L. BLACK-B. GULLS above
the falls, and several thousand BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the lower river.
A female BALTIMORE ORIOLE was still present at a feeder in the
Village of Hamburg through at least November 28.
At Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, reports were highlighted by a
very late MARSH WREN, November 29, along the Warbler Walk Trail.
Promising range of winter finches at feeders this week. In the Lake
Ontario Plains, up to 60 PINE SISKINS with single COMMON REDPOLL and
EVENING GROSBEAK, plus a HERMIT THRUSH, at a feeder in the Town of
Wilson. LARK SPARROW was present at this location through November 24,
and a very unexpected PRAIRIE WARBLER on the 20th. Away from the lake,
in the Allegany County Town of Caneadea, 14 PINE SISKINS throughout
November with a flock of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, and up to 8 EVENING
GROSBEAKS sighted twice in the same yard.
From the fields north of the Iroquois Refuge this week, 3
SHORT-EARED OWLS, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS and a dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK on Posson Road. On East Shelby Road near Barber Road, 300 SNOW
BUNTINGS with 20 HORNED LARKS and at least one LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
Recent reports from the Iroquois Refuge, NORTHERN SHRIKE and 40
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at Sour Springs Road near Oak Orchard Ridge Road. 4
CACKLING GESESE, one SNOW GOOSE and a pair of BALD EAGLES still at
Ring-necked Marsh. Another pair of BALD EAGLES have built a second
nest at Mohawk Pool, along Feeder Road behind the refuge office.
Also this week, a pair of adult BALD EAGLES at Strawberry Island in
the upper Niagara River. Numerous TUNDRA SWANS about Beaver Island
State Park and Grand Island. A MERLIN feeding at Main Street and
Getzville Road in Amherst. And, a surprise RING-NECKED PHEASANT in the
