Our autumn watch program is still seeking a Hawk Counter and a
Hawkwatch Intern (see descriptions below) for Fall 2011.  If

FALL HAWK COUNTER. Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch of Bedford, NY is seeking
an enthusiastic hawk counter for its 2011 autumn count. Applicants
should be independently motivated field workers with experience in
identifying raptors at distance, have excellent communication skills,
and be in good physical condition and willing to work outside for
extended periods. Basic computer literacy with word processing and
spreadsheet software expected. Previous experience with HMANA count
protocols and HawkCount submission preferred, but not necessary.

Count Period August 15-December 1, 2011 w/end date after November 20
negotiable. Expect a six day workweek, 9AM - 5PM w/longer days during
peak of migration. You’ll be working closely with an intern for part
of the survey. Counter will be paid $4000-$5000 (depending on
experience) and provided room in restored farmhouse on sanctuary
property. Counter should own binocular and spotting scope, and will
need reliable personal transportation during the count period. This is
a long count, and not for the faint of heart!


FALL HAWKWATCH INTERNSHIP. Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch of Bedford, NY is
seeking a hawkwatch intern for its 2011 autumn count. No previous
raptor identification experience necessary! Primary duties will
include assisting hawk counter in spotting migrating raptors,
functioning as an interpretative naturalist for visitors to the
observation site, and assisting with setup and breakdown of special
events. Applicants should be motivated, have good communication skills
and enjoy working with the public, and be in sufficient physical
condition to work outside for extended periods. Experience with
computer word processing and spreadsheet software preferred.

Internship Period September 1-October 31, 2011. Expect a four day
workweek, 9 AM-5 PM, including Saturday & Sunday. Intern will be
provided modest stipend and room in restored farmhouse on sanctuary
property, but should have reliable personal transportation during the
internship period. Metro-North train service to New York City located
1.5 miles away.
