This evening (approx. 7:15PM) a group of birders were treated to the appearance of two young, downy Least Bitterns on the east side of the small pond at Massapequa Preserve (MP) where they have been seen this past week. One bird was observed flapping his wings vigorously while perched on a bent over Phragmites stalk,, while the other, perhaps younger bird stayed well back in the reeds. During the time Sue and i were there we did not observe an adult Least Bittern. If you go to MP, a spotting scope is a big help in locating these shy birds.
