Hi Everyone,

I had some time to quickly stop by Bayville today - was looking for Common
and Barrow's Goldeneyes. I didn't find any Barrow's, but found two groups
of Common Goldeneye -closer group had about 10, further group had about
30. Also saw a few drake Red Breasted Mergansers near the shoreline.
Were seen from the parking lot at Stehli Beach. (be careful of the ice in
the parking lot if you go) I checked out Oyster Bay by Centre Island - lots
of Scaup sp. and Buffleheads.

I've been hearing local talk (Massapequa) of duck hunters by the bay -
residents along the Massapequa shore areas complaining about excessive gun
fire. Sure enough, I walked outside my house and heard almost constant
gun fire - keep in mind, I live north of Sunrise so I can't imagine what it
sounds like closer to the bay. I know it's duck hunting season and seems
to be a "tradition" here in Massapequa, but I just hope the hunters are
aware enough not to shoot any endangered/ protected ducks. Listening to
the repetitive gunshots even so far away, sadly I have my doubts. I looked
it up and the season ends end of January - February can't come soon enough.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa
