Wednesday, 26 March 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

At the reservoir, the RED-NECKED GREBE continued, seen off the nw
shore at 8 a.m., and good views in ideal light indicates (as do photo
series) the grebe is gaining some spring plumage; also today, there
were 3 American Wigeons, 2 drakes & a hen, together with many N.
Shovelers in the ne corner (8:15 a.m.), with a total of 120+ N.
Shovelers spread over that & other parts of the res, (& another 50+ of
them around the rest of the park's waters); pair (at least) of Wood
Ducks, 3 American Coots, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 6 Ruddy Ducks lingering;
and at the Meer a male Wood Duck & a pair of Hooded Mergansers, as
have been for some days. (Gulls were starting to arrive in numbers at
the reservoir as I was departing it.)

At the feeder area in the Ramble, the female PINE WARBLER is gaining
some color now & was working the se corner of the feeding area (a.k.a.
Evodia Field), and 2 Baltimore Orioles came in, the female & the
brilliant adult male. Also there were multiple "red" Fox Sparrows. In
general around the park, many hundreds of American Robins, equal or
greater no's. of Common Grackles, & scattered Red-winged Blackbirds
all pointing to the subtle and not-so-subtle arrivals of spring. The
park earlier experienced, at most a few light snow flurries, & now,
lots of nw wind.

good birding,

Tom Fiore
Manhattan
