Andrew Farnsworth and I birded the northeast shore of Randall's Island at noon today and had our first NELSON'S SPARROW of the season in the saltmarsh directly north of baseball field #42. To see it, we had to take advantage of low tide and climb along the rocks that line the shore, heading west to roughly the middle of the saltmarsh. This species, along with Saltmarsh Sparrow, which we did not see today, has become a regular visitor to this area of the island over the last few years in October. We also noted many Savannah Sparrows along the shore.
