Sheryl and I just learned about a proposed wind farm proposal for the Towns of Yates and Somerset (Niagara and Orleans County) along Lake Ontario - called the Lighthouse Wind Energy Project by Apex Energy. Apparently, this has been in the works for some time, with articles in the Buffalo News in October. They have proposed 67 large wind turbines (500'), and permission has already been granted to build a 60 meter tower in the center of the area to check meteorological data. There has already been an informational meeting in Barker and one has been planned for the Yates Town Hall in Lyndonville on Dec. 9 (3-7 p.m.).
As many on this listserve are aware, this is the right in the heart of the bird migration corridor along Lake Ontario. A similar wind project proposal was defeated in Hamlin a couple years ago. It is important that the birding community makes its concerns known. For us, living in the Town of Yates (but not within the exact range of the proposed project), it has certainly hit close to home. Please pass this information along to the appropriate individuals and organizations! I'll share what further I can find out.
