Hi Rob, I compile bird records for the John Burroughs Natural History Society, which has been documenting the bird life of Ulster County for the past 60+ years (Mid-Hudson River Valley, Catskills, and Shawangunk Mountains of NY State). Until recently, we had no confirmed records of Osprey successfully breeding in Ulster County in modern times (roughly the last 100 years).
Over the past three or four years there has been several attempts at Osprey breeding, including birds that appeared to be incubating eggs on nests, but none of these attempts were successful at producing young. Perhaps these were young adults going through the motions and/or producing infertile eggs, or just too inexperienced. It appeared to be just a matter of time, and a few of us speculated that this would be the year that Ospreys would successfully breed in Ulster County. This past July, two separate Osprey nests were documented with well-developed young nearing fledging age, representing our first records of successful breeding for this species in the county. I’ve found that checking in to state birding listservs has been a productive way of gathering information for the project. Based on information from the state, my working map for NY has a breeding range from the Adirondacks down to the Finger Lakes, another in the west in Chautaugua and Cattaraugus Cos., another cluster in Sullivan Co., and finally just the very lowermost reaches of the Hudson Valley, and, of course, all of Long Island. Given how much Ospreys have expanded their range in the past decade, I thought some of you might be aware of new pairs in the state. I was a little surprised not to see any records up the Hudson Valley. Please let me know if you are aware of breeding pairs outside the areas described above. If you’d like, contact me off the list and I can send you a copy of my current version of the map.
