The birding world is a abuzz with the "epic" Franklin's Gull flight we have seen in the northeast U.S. I ran some wind trajectories backward in time using our global forecast system model. I begin one trajectory in NJ and another in upstate NY and one can see that the wind patterns from 1000 meters and up strongly favor western species pushing due east, such as Franklin's Gulls. These trajectories actually originate in their breeding range!!

Good birding to all!!
