Central Park NYC Tuesday April 29, 2016 OBS: Robert DeCandido, m.ob. on bird walk starting from Turtle Pond at 9am to around noon.
Today was the day to be out birding. Before the walk between 7:30am & 8am Bob saw 5 Palm Warlbers, 5 Pine Warblers, 3 Great blue Herons, a female Belted Kingfisher, 2 male Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Blue-headed Vireo, a Great Egret, and a pair of Gadwall from the dock on Turtle Pond. On the walk: Black-crowned Night Heron - Pinetum high in Siberian Elm (spotted by Jeff Ward), also perched in willow at Oven Red-tailed Hawk - pair at San Remo with the male perched in a couple of places in the Ramble Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - female Humming Tombstone Northern Flicker - a few Blue-headed Vireo - 2 Gill source, 1 south side Turtle Pond, 1 Pinetum Black-capped Chickadee - pair near Boathouse Tufted Titmouse - pair Azalea Pond White-breasted Nuthatch - Laupot Bridge House Wren - our FOS Tupelo Field Ruby-crowned Kinglet - males and females around 15 total Hermit Thrush - 10 (more today) Black-and-white Warbler - Upper Lobe Pine Warbler - 3 or 4 Pinetum, 2 Azalea Pond Prairie Warbler - our FOS Shakespeare Garden/Delacorte Eastern Towhee - Laupot Birdge, etc. Chipping Sparrow - 4 Locust Grove (spotted by Jeff Ward) Savannah Sparrow - 2 Locust Grove (spotted by Jeff Ward), 1 Upper Lobe Song Sparrow - small numbers Swamp Sparrow - Upper Lobe White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco - few Northern Cardinal - female feeding young in the nest since yesterday 4/18 Red-winged Blackbird - male & female Rusty Blackbird - male Laupot Bridge Brown-headed Cowbird - male Tupelo Field House Finch - feeders American Goldfinch - male & female in willow on the Point No flycatchers today - neither phoebes nor pewees. AND no Pileated Woodpeckers. Nice to see so many tweets and reports today.
