By the time I joined Doug Futuyma and Michael Harvey at 8:15, they reported that the volume of the flight had already diminished considerably. Even so, the number of birds passing during the next two hours was overwhelming. Without delving into my hastily scribbled tallies or consulting Doug and and Michael for the portion of the flight we observed together, I can say that the passage from 8:15 to 10:15 included on the order of 5,000 to 10,000 Myrtle Warblers, 1500 Purple Finches and Red-winged Blackbirds, 1000 Pine Siskins, 400 Flickers and American Robins, and 70 Eastern Phoebes. A spectacle of nature!
I'll try to get eBird checklists up this afternoon, including an accounting of the inevitable carnage that occurs along Ocean Parkway when these flights fall on weekday mornings: https://www.nybirds.org/KBsearch/y2006v56n1/y2006v56n1rgn10.pdf# Shai Mitra Bay Shore ________________________________________ From: bounce-123037555-3714...@list.cornell.edu [bounce-123037555-3714...@list.cornell.edu] on behalf of d Futuyma [dfutu...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2018 11:11 AM To: nysbirds-L@cornell.edu Subject: [nysbirds-l] Big flight Robert Moses SP (Suffolk) Although westbound movement has now largely subsided, there has been an exceptionally massive flight at Robert Moses this morning. The thousands of burds were dominated by Robins, Flickers, Red-winged Blackbirds, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Tree Swallows, with smaller numbers of other species. Road edges and vegetation have plenty of sparrows, kinglets. Phoebes, and more to search through.
