The male Evening Grosbeak that’s now been in & around Riverside Park
(Manhattan, N.Y. City) in the area of the sanctuary & just to the north of
(from roughly W. 117th St. to as far as near W. 122 St. has continued for a
101st (known) day in that area, seen Tues., March 26th from several points,
including very nearby Sakura Park at Riverside Drive, east of Grant’s Tomb &
just north of W. 122 St., then moving to near W. 120 St. & west of Riverside
Drive, then in the sanctuary of Riverside Park near W. 119 Street (the latter
nearer the north end of a foot trail thru the sanctuary, both ends being marked
by large white Parks Dept. “forever wild” signs. Also, and significant to me at
least, the male Grosbeak uttered a call, just once, when first seen in Sakura
Park, & just as it flew to the west. This was my first time hearing this bird
really make a [typical] ‘kleer’ call. I was in the area from about visible
sunrise there to about 8:45 and lost track of it in the thickets by that hour.
A good number of other much more common species were also in the area.

Thanks to Karen Fung & others who have been observing & reporting on this
rather unusual visitor to Manhattan!

good birding,

Tom Fiore
