*New York July 22 2019 NYSY 07. 22 19 Hotline: Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert To report by email: brinjoseph AT yahoo DOT com Reporting upstate counties: Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, Cayuga, Montezuma Wildlife Refuge and Montezuma Wetlands Complex Compiled: July 22 at 2:00 p.m. Compiler: Joseph Brin Onondaga Audubon Homepage: www.onondagaaudubon.org Greetings: This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of July 15, 2019 Highlights: COMMON LOON LEAST BITTERN BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON GREAT EGRET SANDHILL CRANE PIPING PLOVER STILT SANDPIPER BLACK TERN PEREGRINE FALCON SEDGE WREN CERULEAN WARBLER GRASSHOPPER SPARROW ORCHARD ORIOLE Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 11 species of Shorebirds were reported from the complex this week: KILLDEER STILT SANDPIPER LEAST SANDPIPER SOLITARY SANDPIPER SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER SPOTTED SANDPIPER SOLITARY SANDPIPER GREATER YELLOWLEGS LESSER YELLOWLEGS PECTORAL SANDPIPER WILSON’S SNIPE 7/15: 3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at the Sandhill Crane Unit south of VanDyne Spoor Road. 7/16: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen at Carncross Road. 7/17: A single male CANVASBACK continues at Knox-Marsellus Pool. 7/21: 126 BLACK TERNS were counted from VanDyne Spoor Road. Another seen from Tschache Pool. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen from VanDyne Spoor Road and at East Road. 9 species of Shorebirds includIng 3 STILT SANDPIPERS and 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen along the Wildlife Drive.An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. 21 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in the Morgan Road Marshes. 7/22: 25 GREAT EGRETS were seen along the Wildlife Drive. Onondga County ------------ 7/20: A CERULEAN WARBLER was found along Ferguson Road in the Cicero Swamp. 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen at Green Lakes State Park. 7/21: A SEDGE WREN continues at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. Oswego County ------------ 7/18: 4 COMMON LOONS were seen in Lake Ontario from Selkirk State Park. 7/20: 2 and possibly 4 PIPING PLOVERS were seen north of Sandy Island State Park on Lake Ontario. Also seen was a LEAST BITTERN.
