New York County (in N.Y. City), including Manhattan, Randall’s Island, &
Governors Island
Friday, Oct. 29th:

A second Yellow-breasted Chat was seen (‘again’ - in addition to the lingering
bird near Bryant Park in midtown) at Central Park in the vicinity of Gapstow
bridge which crosses the northern arm of The Pond, in the park’s s.e. quadrant.
Also ongoing at that latter location was a Marsh Wren, as well as several
Winter Wrens, and quite a few other birds around that part of that park. What
can’t be known with certainty is whether the Chat of Central Park’s s.-e.
sector is the same that was there some weeks ago, or a ’new’ bird.

Eastern Bluebird was seen at Inwood Hill Park, and that species ought to be
sought in nearly any location, esp. on cold-front-arrival days in the county.

Multiple American Woodcock have been arriving recently with the largest no’s.
this day, for this season so far. Several (at least ) were in disparate areas
of Central Park as well as in the northern sections of Riverside Park, and
there were a few reports from elsewhere. The Orange-crowned Warblers of late
have not been very thoroughly-reported (and there were also some recent reports
of less-likely-now Tennesse Warbler, even if the latter is still a possibility)
but several have been seen in various locations, including in Central,
Riverside, and (likely) at Highbridge Park, and perhaps in several additional
locations.

Vesper Sparrows were found at Governors Island & also at the north end of
Central Park, & may have continued or turned up elsewhere as this has clearly
been a peak-week for their movements around the region. On Randall’s Island, 2
Yellow-crowned Night-Herons were lingering, one an adult, the other not. At
least one Hooded Merganser was lingering on the Central Park reservoir, where
Pied-billed Grebe & multiple American Coots also continued, with Ruddy Duck and
N. Shovelers and the rest, while Green-winged Teal continued on at The Pool in
the north end of the same park.

- yet more sightings of many species could be mentioned; perhaps in a wrap-up
for October. Thanks to the many patient & quiet observers spread all around the
county.

good birding to all,

Tom Fiore
