The Mountain Bluebird was again seen at and along River Rd, nearby Esopus Meadows Lighthouse Park, Ulster County, NY; the Mt. Bluebird even seen to briefly land on the frozen Hudson River, and also with the ongoing accompanying Eastern Bluebirds & various other birds in that area, on Sunday 1/23. These birds have ranged up to 1/4-mile or more from the preserve, to the north along the road. There were again multiple observers and at various times on Sunday.
- - - - New York County (in N.Y. City), including Manhattan, Randall’s Island, and Governors Island A female-plumaged Long-tailed Duck on the reservoir in Central Park was actually first seen & photo’d on Saturday, 1/22, as indicated with the report & photo now in the Macaulay Library archives: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/408809811 <https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/408809811> (and acknowledging M.B. Kooper for helping to get word out to many on Sunday, 1/23, continuing at the reservoir of Cemtral Park.) In addition to the Glaucous Gull which 100+ observers saw at the Central Park reservoir on Sunday, an Iceland Gull appeared for a while again on Randall’s Island. As reported previously to this list, two Western Tanagers continued on for Sunday in Manhattan in the same 2 respective areas, one in the Clinton / Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood on Manhattan’s far west side, showing at 47th to 48th St. just east of Tenth Ave. or on & nearby there, and the other ongoing in Carl Schurz Park in the far east side of Manhattan, just east of East End Ave. & often a bit south of E. 86 St. there. An Orange-crowned Warbler was seen again as it has been at Randall’s Island. The several Snow Geese have continued in the county with 2 again on Randall’s Island and the 1 in Central Park moving around somewhat in recent days and before, and having shown along the W. Park Drive area, as well as the Great Lawn as so many birders had observed, for Sunday 1/23. Some video and stills of an adult Bald Eagle that came to have lunch in Central Park - and got its meal at the reservoir are at this blog-site: https://www.urbanhawks.com/bald-eagle-on-the-reservoir <https://www.urbanhawks.com/bald-eagle-on-the-reservoir> (thanks to D.B. Yolton) and as some of us also are amazed to see, the nonchalance, putting it mildly, of joggers & passersby just going right on by that rather large bird tearing into its’ repast out on the ice, yards from the running-track on that reservoir. A slo-mo view of that same Bald Eagle grabbing its’ lunch meal is on: https://www.tiktok.com/@emilybernay/video/7056536111648378158 <https://www.tiktok.com/@emilybernay/video/7056536111648378158> (thanks to E. Bernay.) One of a number of photos of a drake Common Goldeneye, as found & seen by the group with A. Barry, at Governors Island on Sunday is archived in the Macaulay Library: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/408959931 <https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/408959931> with thanks to R. Davis, and another lovely photo is here: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/409065731 <https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/409065731> with thanks to L. Goggin. On Saturday, at Central Park’s n. end, among the less-expected (for winter) sparrows were Field and Chipping Sparrows. As have been reported for some weeks now, a good many [Red] Fox Sparrows were continuing around the county, and particularly so in Central Park, where up to ten were seen just in the Ramble and vicinity, with still others widely scattered all around, in that park & elsewhere. Along with a number of additional Bald Eagle sightings there were at least a few Turkey Vultures moving and 2 Black Vultures were seen as well over Manhattan (and Central Park) on Sunday. Altogther, more than 80 species of birds were found in N.Y. County, by a great many birders covering all parts of the county on Sunday, Jan. 23rd.
