Friday, January 28th - Manhattan (in N.Y. City)

Around Manhattan, at least a dozen Canvasback have arrived; fairly certain all
or at least most are fresh arrivals in these waters, which include at least 3
(2 of which bright drakes) on the Central Park reservoir, all the
1st-of-the-season. Also ongoing at the C.P. reservoir are a Long-tailed Duck,
Wood Duck, & as of first light-enough-to-see, at least 3 Iceland Gulls (all of
the form ‘kumlieni’) and a possibility of other uncommon or rare gulls, with a
further report of Lesser Black-backed there as well, & a lot of the
regular-three gulls gathered-up to go through, for the larid-lovers (as usual,
Ring-billed by far the most numerous, followed by [American] Herring, and Great
Black-backed Gulls). A Snow Goose also has stayed on with the many Canada
Geese of Central Park, and various other waterfowl are hanging in. Some
movement has been seen along the Hudson river, & more follow-up at a later
date. There are some additional signs of duck arrivals and we’ll see if yet
more (numbers or ‘new’ species) show as the storm pushes on, and what’s around
afterward, too. At a minimum, 18 species of waterfowl in (all of) N.Y. County
for Friday, with a chance 1 or more additional sp. will have been found.

At least one of the 2 Western Tanagers was in its typical spot on Friday morn’,
at Manhattan’s Carl Schurz Park at & near the feeder array just inside that
park off East End Ave. and south of E. 86th St. (or, just west of the n.w. gate
of the Catbird Playground, in same park). We will also be checking up on the
Clinton / Hell’s Kitchen (in Manhattan) W. Tanager to see if it gets thru the
storm, & with reasonable vigor intact.

good and safe storm or post-storm birds,
