New York County (in N.Y. City), including Manhattan, Randall’s Island, &
Governors Island
Tuesday & Wednesday, March 1st & 2nd:

Western Tanager ongoing at Carl Schurz Park on Manhattan’s east side. I’ve not
checked for the ‘west-side’ Western within the 2 days of this report, nor heard
about other observers noting it (or seeking it in the same period). The
very-uncommon-in-winter Lincoln’s Sparrow was again found & photo’d. in
midtown, not that far south of where hundreds of observers have been streaming
in to view woodcock - west of 2 literary lions (the lions are those that adorn
the main entrance to the N.Y. Public Library). Other sites of course have also
been receiving woodcocks; this includes other sites in mid- & lower Manhattan
(and thru Wed.) ...as well as elsewhere in the county, with several dozen
(*very conservatively*) having passed thru on migration already -and more to
come, American Woodcocks that is...

Two Snow Geese continued their stay in Central Park, often on the Great Lawn
with Canada Geese there; a hen Green-winged Teal has been moving back-&-forth a
bit within Central Park (“pool” to reservoir) lately. A pair of N. Pintails
were ongoing at and around Sherman Creek, at the Harlem River in n. Manhattan
off the e. end of Dyckman St. and a bit north to the lagoon-like area where
some ducks, gulls, & other water-loving birds will congregate. Common
Goldeneyes were again found off Randall’s Island as well as off Governors
Island to Wed. An early Osprey came along and past Randall’s Island later in
day on Wednesday, & some more of Bald Eagles & Turkey Vultures were seen in a
few locations. Besides the American Robins slow increases (to 3/2), there are
also fair no’s. of Cedar Waxwings, for some locations.

Migration was on for this start of March with more birds on the wing, and in
the wind.

good birding to all,

Tom Fiore
