A 1CY Black-headed Gull (BHGU) continued today on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge in Queens. I scoped this bird from the southend and later from
Big John’s Pond overlook, where I got to study it for a bit. As far as I could
tell, this bird does not show any inner primary moult so still 1CY.

Also present was a non breeding Bonaparte’s Gull (BOGU) for good comparison. In
sorting through the nearby duckage that was in view I picked out a few Northern
Shovelers, 1 Green-winged Teal and a Eurasian x American Wigeon. The latter is
a first on the pond for me.

Water level continues to draw down and we are hoping to do one more digout for
the season. If you do visit Big John’s Pond Overlook, I would recommend bug
spray. The mosquitoes there are something fierce.

Bless up!
