This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 26, 2022 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON RUDDY DUCK CACKLING GOOSE ROUGH -LEGGED HAWK BLACK VULTURE KILLDEER ICELAND GULL PEREGRINE FALCON MERLIN SHORT-EARED OWL SNOWY OWL NORTHERN SHRIKE HERMIT THRUSH EVENING GROSBEAK Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 1/7: A SHORT-EARED OWL,a SANDHILL CRANE and a SHRIKE were seen at Carncross Road. At the Mucklands on Rt. 31 west of the Seneca River the following were recorded. KILLDEER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and an ICELAND GULL. 1/8: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Howland Island and another at Carncross Road. A CACKLING GOOSE was seen from East Road. Oswego County ------------- 1/6: A CACKLING GOOSE and 2 RUDDY DUCKS were seen at Lake Neahtawanta in Fulton. 1/7: A SNOWY OWL was seen on the rocks at Oswego Harbor. 1/8: 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a PINE SISKIN were seen on Rt.26 in Williamston. Nearby on sol Davis Road an EVEN IN GROSBEAK was seen. A RED-THROATED LOON was seen in Oswego Harbor. Onondaga County ------------ 1/4: A HERMIT THRUSH was found in Raddison. 1/8: 8 RUDDY DUCKS were seen on Onondaga Lake from the West Shore Trail. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen near the duck blind on Smokey Hollow Road in the Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. I was seen again today in the same location. Madison County ------------ ICELAND GULL and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continue daily on Hardwood Island Road north of Canastota 1/6: Up to 48 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue at the Hawes Road feeders on Easton Reservoir. 1/7: 7 RUDDY DUCKS were seen on Woodman Pond north of Hamilton. Oneida County ------------ 1/5: A ROUGH - LEGGED HAWK was seen on Sterling Road in Durhamville. 1/7: 4 BLACK VULTURES continue near the Rt. 365 exit in Rome. 1/8: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Harris Road in Deerfield.
