New York County -in N.Y. City- including Randalls, Governors, Manhattan, and Roosevelt Islands and the adjacent waters and skies above -
into Monday, June 22 - A slightly-belated Dickcissel photographed on Governors Island on the last full day of spring - 6-20 - is an unusual find for the date, or for any part of June here. Monday, 6-22 brought a confirmed sighting of a Little Blue Heron to Randalls Island, a rare sight for this county. Also seen there were 2 American Oystercatchers, and ongoing at Randalls all this month have been Willow Flycatchers and at least 2 actively-nesting pairs of Cliff Swallows, as well as now-regular Yellow-crowned Night Heron, and a nice variety of other birds seen by a number of observers. Two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have been seen at Central Park, with at least one male very regular in the northern sector of that park, still present on 6-22. So far there seems only anecdotal evidence for any nesting this year in this county by this species, but more observations may tell still more ad summer continues. Some of the recent warblers around the county were ongoing into Monday, with now fledged Yellow Warblers from nests in several locations including those on Manhattan island, and elsewhere in the county. Other simply-lingering warblers to Monday include N. Parula, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Ovenbird, and Common Yellowthroat, the last-noted a possible nester in this county, which has nested in the recent past here. American Redstarts that remain could bear watching for any signs of carrying of food… Blue-gray Gnatcatchers continue on to summer at Central Park, perhaps also elsewhere in the county, and it appears likely that Indigo Bunting may be breeding again in at least one part of Manhattan, this year… time will tell.
