Attended an interesting presentation of IE8 this afternoon in Christchurch.

Spent the weekend playing with Chrome.

How many people have read the whole Chrome cartoon? All 39 pages of it!

One objection I have to the Chrome web site is that all the info is in
the form of YouTube videos. WAF is very low!!! Wife doesn't like me
sitting there watching videos on my laptop while she's trying to watch a
movie. Skimming a movie is also harder.

Chrome claim to fame is it's multi threaded nature. Thought it was
interesting that the MS8 solution seems to be to launch separate copies
of the browser. You can even see them in the process list.

I do like that Google have realised that our screens are all going
16:9/HD. Rather than wasting the title bar space they put the tabs on
it. IE8 seemed to use up stacks of the vertical space. I also like
Chromes use of a vanishing status bar.

The development stuff in IE8 was great though. Some of the visual tools
to help you debug CSS layouts is fantastic. I'm going to be downloading
a copy just so I can use that stuff unless someone can point me to OSS
tools that do the same thing.

From a support POV, I still think both browsers have a long way to
come. I wonder some times if the guys writing these things actually
ever support any users and have to talk people though things over a
boring old phone!

Cheers Don
