Zend Platform is fine for low traffic but once it starts getting loaded up with moderately complex scripts you can run into cache problems causing sporadic fatal errors. Zend support weren't able to fix the issues within the time frame we needed so we switched to APC - no more problems, and load went down on the webservers. Note - I haven't tried it again since early this year, so they may have since fixed the problems.
