I'd be interested in what you come up with here as well... I don't have
any actual experience beyond feasibility-study stage. I joined up with
the forums on www.ynot.com - and the advice I got was basically to try
the hosts advertising on the site... I found something that looked
reasonably together, hosting in the US and Holland (if you're doing some
thing... err... "niche" then non-US might be best). I signed up and
found that their admin-interface was so buggy that I bailed on it a
couple of days later. A week or so later the entire project folded, and
that was that.

The ynot forum people are friendly and communicative though - it
probably wouldn't hurt to look for advice there if you can't get it
elsewhere. Or even if you can.

Different laws of physics seem to apply in the adult content world - eg:
a lot of them seem to go via CCbill as a payment provider - who seem to
offer an out of the box system that requires minimal setup etc, but
unless I'm much mistaken, they charge vastly more than normal providers.
People pay massive percentages for everything and they just seem to
accept it as par for the course.

I was involved with another thing back in the UK - the guy was telling
me about the dodgy phone-call adverts in the back of magazines...
apparently there is so much money in it that the advertising real-estate
changes hands several times. People get in first and buy up massive
blocks of magazine space at the back knowing that the porn people will
buy it off them for even more.

And that alas (or not) is the sum total of my knowledge.
