In my experience short of paying a *local* gateway, this is the fare. It's gets worse as the per message price goes down. The solution I use here is a GSM cellular modem (though CDMA versions are also available I recommend GSM for obvious reasons) with a Vodafone SIM card in it. Message delivery is as good as what you get from a handheld phone. I have one laying around here I might be willing to sell. If you do go down this route - get a Wavecom as they are the most respected brand.
