I have a consistent fault of the type you described in both Chrome and IE.
If I click on one of the side images on the main page and then on the main
image the light box appears and seems ok but if I click on one of the
scrolling images at the bottom of the light box I get multiple images loaded
which gets worse the more images I click on. In Chrome they duplicate
vertically but in IE they occur horizontally.

That might not be your only problem. :) Have you tested it in Chrome?
The lightbox popup did some odd things for me.

Sometimes, once I've selected another image, I get them stacked one on
top of another with triplicate or duplicate of the same image.
Sometimes they go to the right. Can't seem to duplicate the right
stacking one with consistency.
