there is not too much about running your own mailserver, install postfix and off you go ... the problem is the maintenance kills you. mailchimp/campainmonitor are a) cheeper than the time you'll spend dealing with block lists, providers that hate you, and all that stuff and b) actually get your mails delivered. any option of doing bulk mail on your own will end in tears ... :-)
