A couple of other options: Pommo is a fairly simple and effective tool - you might consider it the Wordpress of mailing list software.
CiviCRM is a full-fledged CRM app which contains CiviMail, a very complete piece of mailing software. Have used for (legitimate!) mailouts of 20K+ and had excellent results. CiviMail uses VERP by default which may freak out your "power users", but most people don't notice it and it is great for handling bounces / unsubscribes. I'm with Craig here: self-hosted mail systems aren't so hard, provided you step up and put good anti-spam policies in place first.
