Presentation overview

Topic: Debugging techniques for PHP programmers
Speaker: Jochen Daum

Speaker background: Jochen started his PHP career when building a "web
server on a CD" system for Wella AG in Germany in 2001. Since coming
to New Zealand in 2002 he has worked in several roles as a programmer
and software architect with PHP. Since 2004 he offers his services of
website system development, maintenance and consulting through his
company Automatem Ltd.
Throughout these years, Jochen has come across a wide variety of
off-the-shelf CMS and E-Commerce applications as well as build a
number of website himself from scratch. He has also build his own CRUD
framework phpdbedittk.

"Being a to debug PHP and analyse a problem fast has always been a
business requirement throughout my career. The presentation will not
so much focus on using debugging to provide or deepen an understanding
of a php application, but rather to be able to analyse and fix a
problem quickly."

The presentation will cover the following areas:

- My code guidelines in light of debugging
- PHP debugging facilities: functions, error logging
- Common debugging methods: divide an conquer, backtracing
- Comparison between text editor and IDE as a debugging environment
- Human behaviours and debugging
- Other outside debugging facilities overview: Firebug, Wireshark, Fiddler

This meetup will be held at Auckland University, Tamaki Campus:
Building to be confirmed
cnr Morrin Road & Merton Road
Glen Innes
Auckland

There is plenty of parking available. Please use the map link for
directions: http://bit.ly/4s5YwV

To get there by train, take the train from Britomart station at 5:10pm
or 5:28pm: http://bit.ly/CKU3N

There are various ways to get there by bus, please use the MAXX
website to get a bus connection: http://bit.ly/Fc7cO

More detailed instructions on how to get there:

=> From South Auckland:

>From Southern MW exit at Mt. Wellington and turn right at the bottom
of the offramp.

Go straight for about 2 km (Mt Wellington Highway) until you hit a
T-intersection. Turn right there.

When you get to the Panmure Roundabout, turn "soft left" (into 10
o'clock direction, 2nd road off the roundabout) and mind the traffic
light immediately after the roundabout exit.

Go straight for another 500 m until you can turn left via a bridge
that crosses the railway line. Turn and follow this road through the
industrial area until you get to another roundabout.

Hang right there and you should see Tamaki Campus ahead of you on the
right. Take the gate on the right that is next to the big satellite
dishes - this may not be the closest but it is the gate through which
you must exit later. Go straight until you hit a fence, turn right
there and work your way down to the road at the bottom by following
the fence. Continue until you see a bus stop on the left, then go and
find yourself a car park in the large car park to the right.

Turning back towards the buildings from the car park, you see a
building with a curved facade. We're in building 731 to the left of
this, on the middle floor, in room 203, which is at the far end of the
building from the elevator shaft. Doors should be open either end of
the building.

=> From East Auckland (Howick./Pakuranga):

Cross via the old Panmure bridge and drive up to the Panmure
roundabout. Turn right there (about a 4 o'clock turn) and follow the
directions above.

=> From the city / North Shore:

Take the Southern Motorway and exit at Greenlane. Hang left at the
exit and go straight up the hill towards Remuera. At the
T-intersection at the top, turn right.

Continue along Remuera Rd. (which then turns into St. Johns Rd.)
through Upland Village Remuera, down the ditch, up the hill to
Meadowbank and down again past the Meadowbank shops, straight on past
Purewa Cemetery and eventually St. Johns College to the St. Johns
roundabout - the first one you'll come across.

Turn right there and continue to the next roundabout.

Turn left there and head down the hill past the university sports
fields on the right to the next roundabout.

Turn right here. You could now shortcut through the first gate on the
left (which closes at night) but the safe option if you're unfamiliar
with the campus is to continue another 200 m to the gate with the
satellite dishes and follow the directions above.

=> By public transport:

Train: Take the Eastern Line to Glen Innes. Assuming you're coming
from the city, continue along the platform in the direction of travel,
then cross the tracks at the crossing at the end of the platform.
After another 100 m you'll get to Merton Rd., and Tamaki Campus is
ahead to your right. Turn right, cross the road where it's convenient,
and find the first campus gate that's open. You'll either end up on
the big cark park (from where you can follow the directions above) or,
worst-case, at the gate with the satellite dishes, from where you can
walk back to building 731 inside.

Buses: Lines 625, 635, and 655 as well as 007 run past the campus.
Your cue is the bus going down steeply through a residential area
after the St. Johns roundabout. You'll emerge opposite the uni sports
fields - hit the button as soon as the bus turns. As you get off, you
see the campus ahead on your right. Turn right at the roundabout and
find yourself the first gate to get in.

There are also Howick & Eastern buses that stop close to the gate with
the satellite dishes.

Kind Regards,

Jochen Daum
