Google have admitted that they don't bother with keywords meta anymore.

I've actually never seen anybody use wildcards before or even heard of such a 
thing until now.  In the early days of search engines there were a lot of 
proprietary behaviour going on so maybe the developer picked up on something 
like that.  Alternatively it could be something that their CMS does for it's 
own benefit.  Or, maybe the developer just has no clue.
