[*In my opinion*], it is a national condition.

In *my experience* when compared to other nationalities I've met and lived
among, Kiwi's are far more likely than to verbally cut down successful
people than to give them kudos and try and emulate them.

To use a highly contrived example, if you see someone driving a Lamborghini

   - an American will say "good for that guy /gal"
   - an Aussie will say "awesome car"
   - a Kiwi will say "what a dick / show off" (but secretly covet the car)

Again, only my opinion, and only based on my experience.
