CGI is slow and a pain, fcgi is way more what you want. we run all php based stuff this way, even though it is not too much left nowadays :-) a nice plus is that nginx maps in the frontend all the URLs you need to one consistent thing while in the backend you might have different stuff serving your various blocks of the site. we use it to map in our blogs that run somewhere else into our normal site instead of the often seen: blog.domain.tld
