3 words of advice: Backup, Backup, Backup! ;)

Most package managers handle the upgrade well(YUM, APT, Windows EXE).
Early upgrades didn't apply the changes into the GRATS table for stored procs, 
triggers etc... but as far as I'm aware, if you're using a current package it 
should perform the upgrade seamlessly.

You will need to execute an additional command that updates the GRANT tables 
for the new Trigger and Stored Proc permissions for each user that requires it.

This will get you the permissions necessary for the root user: 
mysql -u root -p
GRANT ALL ON *.* TO root@'192.168.12.1' IDENTIFIED BY 'pass' WITH GRANT OPTION;
FLUSH PRIVILEGES
