Not quite. It's a piece of cake getting the contents of a barcode into a field.
Scanners are just keyboards. But another thing entirely to submit the form that
field is contain in when the scan is complete.

I have looked at preambles. The scanner we are testing doesn't support them
unfortunately, and to be honest, are at the wrong end of the problem anyway.
This particular scanner also doesn't output return carriages (which would allow
for a javascript solution). I have worked with ones that do, but we are
constrained to this unit.

Still digging around on ActiveX.... If it works for Webcams, it must work for
other USB devices.

Yes, they do. I know this from personal experience myself.

I'm talking more along the lines of a web interface detecting the fact that
something has been scanned in the first place.

Without any user action other than the scanning of a barcode.

I would have said the same as Olwen.

As far as I know most barcode scanners look like keyboards. No personal
experience, but that's what I've gathered.

Has anyone had any experience with getting USB devices to execute
events on web pages? (Webcam would be an example)

We have a central application and hardware that we want to enhance with
a USB barcode scanner. A global design goal is for the application to post data
to a new page as soon as a scan is performed, without user action.

Javascript and hidden fields have their limitation in this respect, so
I am thinking along the lines of ActiveX here. Just wanted to see if anyone
here has done something similar.

        Cheers
