I have installed functioning versions of Symfony on both Windows and Linux.

I encountered two problems with Symfony on Windows.
1) IIS
2) no symbolic links

I solved (1) by using Apache web server and (2) by creating a web server
alias for the Symfony data folder like so

Alias /MyProject/sf/ "c:/php/symfony/data/web/sf/"
Alias /MyProject/ "c:/workspace/MyProject/web/"
<Directory "c:/workspace/MyProject/web/">
   AllowOverride All
</Directory>

in httpd.conf

Getting no_script_name to work with an alias required the following
tweak of .htaccess
RewriteBase /MyProject
