Amazon EC2 is not the ideal location, because some (clueless) ISPs
appear to blacklist its entire address space. We route our mail
through a server at Linode to get notifications delivered to Comcast
(well known as one of the more clueless mail "providers") customers.
This. My gut feel is that in terms of mail actually being read by
people, spam filters are probably going to cause more perceived
reliability problems than whether the web servers CPU is 'overburdened'
by sending 50 emails per day...
