Personally I would go with wrapping libpurple (or perhaps finch) if it ends up 
not being too much trouble. I think it would be the most robust solution, and 
of course you would have access to other protocols if you wanted them in the 
future.

Have you tried compiling PHPurple? Even if it is non-maintained it may work 
well enough as is.
