Ensure reference sites are your best possible work *and* ensure they are
100% standards compliant. You have no control over what people will use to
look at them with so check that they look good on desktops, tablets and
smartphones. The standards bit is two-fold: Potential customers might check
it with a testing site like the W3 one and you have absolutely no control
over what they look at your sites with so in a few months they might be
using a new release of Chrome or Safari that breaks them - being standards
compliant reduces the risk.

First suggestion: Make yourself a personal site. At this stage there's no
need to say you're looking for work on it, but make it's content something
that won't alienate potential customers. Make sure you get spelling and
grammar correct.

Are you a member of any community, religious, sporting or social groups? Is
their website old and tired? Offer to redesign their website.
