Hi Harvey, I've been using Webfaction with great success for some time now. Their pricing is very reasonable and their resources generous. When I've had to use their support in an emergency they got back to me in about 20 minutes with the fix.
They allow SSH and provide lots of different application types (PHP 5.2-5.4, Python, Ruby, Static etc...) I don't think they have a UK point of presence but they can locate your server/account in Europe (Amsterdam I believe).
