This presumes that an unconnected {{Head}} never has a {{MutableNodeState}},
which is not true. Obtaining a {{MemoryNodeBuilder}} from a
{{ModifiedNodeState}} results in such a situation by virtue of the unwrapping
of the {{ModifiedNodeState}} happening in the constructor of
{{MutableNodeState}}.
