Committed revision 1740333: fixed accordingly and also adjusted
{{DefaultSyncContext.sync(String)}} based on the finding above, tests added or
extended to explicitly state verify the behavior.
[~tripod], please reopen and adjust fix if you disagree or see any problem with
this approach.
